Hi, I hope I don't appear as ignornat on this as I am ;-) but , for example, what do these terms and others like them mean? chalumeau C#, clarion G#, altissimo F

Chalumeau is the lower register up to middle-line Bb. Or some people say that the chalumeau is only really up to F and the next few "throat tones" aren't proper chalumeau. The word chalumeau originally referred to a folk instrument, and you may still see it used in that sense as well.
Clarion is the upper register up to C two lines above the stave.
Altissimo is the ear-shattering squeaks (when I'm playing) above that.

Rev- As in the thread [above] Research Books, I suggest you obtain a paperback copy of a book by Pino, Lawson, Brymer or others [usually with clarinet in the title] for info and reference. These and others are available on-line from B&N, Amazon others?, inexpensively. Regards, Don
