Why not just have the chat open all the time? People can come and go as they wish.

It was open all the time ... and unfortunately there was a lot of abuse (language wise) in the recent weeks.

That's a shame, I kept on telling myself "Next week, next week, I'll stay around and chat next week" but never did. Ah well.

Could you put a language screen on the chat, so if a particular word was used in a post, it wouldn't post?

People who want to abuse a system easily find out ways to get around any controls. The BBoard is controllable, but a near-real-time chat isn't. Sorry.

Perhaps a chat system where we need to log in would be an improvement? One that links your chat account to your bboard account, where you need to belong to the bboard for, say, a week, before chatting. That could cut down on the riff-raff who probably won't go through the trouble of waiting a week before chatting, and allow you to restrict chat privileges of abusive members. People who genuinely want to chat would probably have been members of the board for a while.

Whilst understanding Mark's reasons entirely I have to say the loss of chat is a real shame. I haven't been on for the last couple of weeks but had noticed that much of the abusive language was occuring outside the regular Sunday sessions. Maybe a version of EEBaum's suggestion may be workable.

I am grateful to Mark just for running the BBS. The chat room was unnecessary work and if it being gone keeps Mark doing the BBS then fine.
Also, a chat room can drain off threads that may have otherwise been on the BBS. I would rather have a chat topic be on the regular BBS where I won't miss it and I can search for it.
IMHO.
Thanks Mark,
Bob

I have some more urgent things to do right now (like consolidating the searches and trying to coordinate everything back to one Web site) but I'll look into a userid/password requirement for the chat.
In fact, I need to coordinate the userid/password system for the Classifieds & the BBoard anyway ...

Thanks Mark. I totally understand you have greater priorities elsewhere, just know I'll miss being able to unwind from a weekend of rehearsals with like-minded people before facing the strain of Monday morning!
