 Mouthpiece Question
Author: gerry
Date:   2003-10-09 00:34

I recently bought a Mouthpiece on eBay. It was advertised as a new "Babbet". I believe that I read somewhere that this term refers to a blank mouthpiece that requires to be "Worked" for it to be usable. Is this true, or have I just got a basic mouthpiece?

Thanks for your help,

Gerry.

If it is a blank, you probably could try playing on it. It should work, althohg I don't know how nice it could sound. If indeed it is a blank (I don't know how one would tell except if it doesn't sound nice), send it to a refacer (read recent postings about Dave Spiegelthal) and have them shape it up nicely for you. For the cost of a refacing ($30 I think?), and the cost of the mouthpiece that you paid, you could have a professionaly refaced, beautiful sounding mouthpiece at a lesser price than going through a store.

Babbitt is a mouthpiece maker
They make regular finished items as well as blanks..check their website on www.woodwind.org under the retail section of the "clarinet pages"

Ebay dealers rarely sells unfinished blanks....they are mouthpieces whose facings are placed on blanks made by Zinner, or Babbitt, or Costello or whoever.

Consider the possibility that the seller purchased a blank and tried to refinish it himself with unsafisfactory results.......Personally, if that's the case, I wouldn't throw good money after bad.

J.J. Babbitt are the manufacturers of Otto Link, Wolf Tayne, Meyer etc.. They do sell blanks on request and have blanks for more obscure mouthpieces like C melody saxes etc..

Ah, yes, Babbitt and Costello -- two-thirds of the bass section of the East Hampton Symphony Orchestra. However, I can never remember: Who's on first? And third bass? I don't know.

Thanks for all your help. I looked at the Babbitt mouthpiece again and it looks as though it has been faced. It has no name or marking on it. It is just plain. I will try playing it and see just how it sounds. If OK I will keep it as a spare.

Thanks again.

Gerry.

If Who's on first bass and I Don't Know's on third. How can Babbitt and Costello comprise two-thirds of the bass section?

The Babbitt is one of the models in their line up as per Link, Meyer etc.. If it is not numbered then it is likely to have been faced by somebody else. Babbitt's make some of the most popular saxophone mouthpieces but most of their clarinet lines are decidedly unpopular. Maybe a custom facing would help. I have tried numerous Meyer's and Link's on clarinet, I use a Meyer Alto, Meyer Soprano and Meyer and Link tenor mouthpieces, and have not found them particularly inspiring.

Jack --

Of course, you're right. It wasn't B & C; it was Larry, Moe, and Curly. But I'm going to shortstop this since I Don't Give A Darn.

Thanks Todd,

That's great. All the way from mouthpieces to Abbot & Costello. Anyway, I always wanted to transcript of "Who's on First?" - made my day. One of these days, I'll get back to the mouthpiece and try it on my horn.

Thanks,

Gerry.
