Granting that Stravinsky knew what he wanted and therefore wrote very specific articulations and rhythms, I am still a little unsure about how to interpret his usage of breath marks.
Firstly, does a breath mark indicate that the music should shortly pause, or that you should breath in air, or both. And if so, how long?
Regarding the length of a pause, should it be consistent for all breath marks within a movement. If so, does one there for pause the same amount or a little more if the breath mark is written on top of a 16th/8th rest, assuming one is already pausing equal to a 16th or 8th.
Perhaps when he wrote a rest and a breath together, he wanted one to wait the rythmical value of the rest, then pause for the breath (ad lib) value.
Finally, if Stravinsky really wanted the combination of rests/breaths to be rhythmically adhered to, then why combine two markings which can both refer to rhythm? Why not just write whatever rest value he wanted without the commas?

You could just listen to one of many good recordings. Stravinsky put many, many marks in his music. In the 3 Pieces, to me, it seems overly marked up and can be confusing...it may be easier to decifer if you listen to popular interpretation.

A comma in Stravinsky is not necessarily a breath mark. He uses a comma to separate things that should not be connected. He will separate 2 notes, 2 phrases, or 2 sections of a piece. In the last 27 bars of the Octet there are 26 commas in the clarinet part. I really don't think that he expects the clarinetist to breathe 26 times in 30 seconds. As long as you make the separation a breath is not obligatory

So maybe commas seperate phrases, but rests don't necessarily.

There are only 4 rests in the first mvt. of the 3 Pieces-three of the rests have commas that are probably redundant.
I had a chamber music teacher who said that Stravinsky thought that performers were idiots-every little thing has to be spelled-out for them in order for them to understand his music.
