If anyone's the least bit interested in clarinet & choro, they've gotta get "Pixinguina" by Paulo Moura. It's available on Amazon. Hard to describe the wonderful melodies, hooks and rhythum, suffice to say it's hand's down the best I've heard.

¿Has anyone seen the commercial on TV with Yo-Yo Mah playing Brazilian music? A clarinetist seems to be an important part of the group, judging from the ad.

Several weeks ago, I heard a great Br.-music group on NPR Perf. Today, I believe it was Yo Yo and Pacquito De Rivera, etc [live!] GREAT cello/clarinet "interplay" , believe it to be same/from a recent CD recording. Anyone know of this? well worth finding! Don

The Yo-Yo Ma "Brazil" (includes Pacquito Rivera) (Sony Classical SK 89935) is OK stuff but sort of carefully rendered, nothing too exciting. Imo, the Paulo Moura "Pixinguinha" (BJAC 5019-2, available from Amazon), is the best Brazilian Choro available on disc. The Yo-Yo Ma disc includes a couple tunes by Pixinghuinha that are also on the Paulo Moura (clarinetist) disc. The Moura is a work of genius, the Ma is merely a work of art. Rivera (Pacquito) can play great choro. He did with Paulo Sergio Santos on a medley of mostly Pixinguinha songs at the 2000 Clarinet Fest in Oklahoma that really did bring down the house. Btw, the Kronos Quartet "Nuevo" (Nonesuch Records 79649-2) Is a triumphal recording of Mexican classical & street music, great rhythum, pathos and humor plus a dance mix. (Loved the Tuba).

Maurita Mead, the clarinet professor at the University of Iowa, has recorded an excellent CD of Brazilian choros. The CD is titled "Over the Fence" and the only contact info I know is the web address on the back of the case, www.klarity.com (Klarity Multimedia).

The M. Mead disc seems to me to be representative of what a good clarinet player can do in trying to copy what they've heard some choro masters perform. I commend her for the effort. She played some of this at the 2000 Clarinet Fest and it went over very well. Nevertheless it's pretty derivative and not particularly authentic or exciting. Start with Paulo Sergio Santos or Paulo Moura.
