 Leblanc LL vs Buffet R-13
Author: john gibson

Have both. Just got the LL....great sound but a bit more resistant than the R-13. Best MPC so far is an old Brilhart Nilo Hovey. Any thoughts on the resistance factor of Leblanc vs Buffet? Or any other characteristics. Maybe even preferences between the two. I keep going back to the Buffet for some reason, but certainly enjoy the Leblanc. Thoughts?

You may be going back to the R-13 simply because it so that it just "feels right" to you.

I have a Leblanc Symphonie II that feels less resistant than the few R-13s that I've tried so it may just be the effect of variations between individual instruments rather than brand specific.

John: I routinely play Buffet R13 and E11 and sometimes one of the Vitos, a Selmer and an Amati. I bought a LeBlanc Infinite a few months ago and am having a problem finding a mp that plays "right" with it. I guess my experience is similar to yours. Although I like LeBlancs the Buffets just seem to play easier for me. I don't have any explanation.

Aren't the Double L's large bore horns?

Your standard mouthpiece may not be a proper 'fit'?

I have several LeBlanc pro models, they all play very easily, well in tune. My older Selmer CT also plays well with a bit more resistance, even if it is a "big-bore" [15.0 mm].. IMHO and experience, the mp and its match to the barrel determines the degree of resistance. Don

The LL is a big bore model. I would definitely experiment around with mouthpiece selection - and wouldn't be a bit surprised if you elect to play a different mouthpiece on the LL than on the R13.

What mouthpieces are generally successful on a large bore LL

I have an R-13 Bb and an LL A clarinet. We all know the R-13 is capable of that big sound. I don't know if it's fair to compare an A LL to a Bb Buffet, but the LL is quite a bit more resistant, enough that it feels like a small bore horn. Resistance is a characteristic of any A clarinet, but perhaps the big bore makes it easier to play than it otherwise would be. I've never played any other A so I couldn't tell you firsthand. I'd be eager to try an R-13 A to compare.

The Leblanc keywork does indeed have a much different feel, and I can see how some would prefer it over Buffet's, but if I had a gun to my head and had to pick which one I liked better, I'd go with Buffet.

The Greg Smith Cicero Kaspar mpc works well with both. It's optimized for the R-13 but is open enough to make the LL sing. My M13 Lyre also does well on both.n

Hi...I've played Leblancs for over 40 years and have had a LL since 1964. I used a Sym III and the LL together with mouthpieces of the period and they played about the same with the LL being a bit more secure in the upper register. The LL never had quite the dynamic range of the Sym III for me though. Alas, after forty years my favorite old mouthpiece died and I had to find another. I went through several mp's but finally ended up with a Zinner blank. The Zinner was very disappointing on the Sym III but it did wonders for the LL. It opened up the dynamic range and gave it a focus in all registers that it never had before, even with a Vandorn 2RVA that was supposed to be specially matched to it back in 64. The horn really sings now. The Zinner blank is an unfinnished mouthpiece blank but works quite well. And, for about $35 you can't go wrong. You probably want the plus 1 tip opening with the angled wall. The old big bores were around .590. The R-13 is .575. The LL is in between at .582. I think most modern clarinets have gone to the .575 (or there abouts) dimension. Selmer has a couple of models that are much smaller. The Zinner is a modern mouthpiece so it doesn't surprise me that it didn't really match the Sym III. I put the Zinner on a Selmer Bundy which is a large bore and it was a disaster. The old 2RVA from 64 works like gangbusters on the Bundy. Keep experimenting and good luck .
