I was in France the last few weeks doing a bicycle trip that ended in Paris. Naturally, I pulled the phone books down and looked up Selmer and Buffet to inquire about a factory tour. I also tried this about a year ago and was flatly refused as I was again several weeks ago with Selmer. Funny, I could not find Buffet in the phone book (could be under a parent name?). Seems like it's still hard to get a tour nowdays. I also made a trip to the Woodwind/Brasswind in Paris just to see the place. I was discussing factory tours with one of the people there and he stated that they usually could "work something out". so, if you're in Paris and want a factory tour with no results, try contacting the WW/BW and give it a try.

There are perfectly good reasons for instrument makers refusing tours. One is disruption another is industrial espionage another is disruption. The makers at UMI have tours of some kind but even then they do not let people see the whole process or factory layout. Factory tours are usually reserved for VIP's (the customer is not considered a VIP especially in France), instrument repairers and wholesale dealers and then they are fairly cagey. Business is business!
