My band director is implementing a (get this....)..Concerto Competition. I would love to enter but I don't know many clarinet solos composed or transcribed for band accompianment (other than the weber concertino, which i've performed elsewhere and don't want to do again).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm a fairly talented high school clarinetist and is up for anything. Before the mention of this competition, i wanted to tackle the Rossini Variations next....Does anyone know if theres a band arrangement of this piece? if not, any other suggestions are welcomed.
thanks

I've played the band arrangment of the Rossini Them/Var. It's pretty good. There is also a Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto written specifically for clarinet and band. I haven't actually heard it so I don't know how good it is. You might look into it though.

i've played the rimsky korsakov...it stinks. the clarinet part is nothing but arpeggios. theres 2 cadenzas that are mediocre as well. i read it in school. both solo and band parts suck.

Other clarinet solos for band for GOOD high school players include:
-Messager, Solo de Concurs
-Cavallini, Adagio and Tarantella
-Mozart Concerto (Hundsberger)
-Jean-Jean, Arabesque
-Immer Kleiner, Schriener

Waaaay back in 1960, I played a piece called Scherzo by Phillip Cardew with my high school band. As I recall, it was not extremely difficult, but very showey(sp). And it was written for band accompaniment.

Another great showy piece with band is Carnival of Venice by Jeanjean. Depending on the tempo, it can be quite a workout!
