 Method books everyone should have
Author: obtuse

(I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I wasn't able to find a list and I thought one might be helpful)

As a young and avid clarinettist, I'm curious to know what you all think which method books all clarinettists should have in their collection and be familiar with.

I'm sure the list probably starts
Klose Complete Method
Rose Studies
Baermann III

I've been feeling lately (after some 7 years of playing [frown]) that I really want to get serious about playing. I want to just buckle down for a few hours a day to work on all aspects of playing and having a list of things to look into, I think, would be a good start.

Thanks for any help you're able to give

The Stievenard is a Schirmer publication.

Other good books and studies I like:
ALBERT,J.B. 24 Varied Scales and Exercises
BONADE Clarinetist's Compendium
HAMELIN Gammes et Exercices
JEANJEAN Vade-Mecum du Clarinettiste
JEANJEAN 16 Modern Etudes
KELL 17 Staccato Studies
LABANCHI/Weber 35 Studies for Clarinet
OPPERMAN Modern Daily Studies Books I and II
SARLIT 25 Etudes de Virtuosite
STARK Arpeggio Studies
STEIN The Art of Clarinet Playing

I have heard good things about the Jettel books, but have not used them myself.

In addition to the above, I would add:

Rose - 20 Grand Studies from the Caprices (different than the Rose 32 and 40)

Jettel - Preliminary Studies to the Accomplished Clarinetist

Voxman - Classical Studies for Clarinet (based on the works of Bach and Handel)

Uhl - 48 Etudes

Pares - Scales for Clarinet

Arban - Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet ...GBK

A FINE Thread, all contributions welcomed. GBK, et al, my good cl'ist teacher-friend is still looking for the "combination" of a Rose # [4?] with an Arban # [16?], which, as he describes it, functions as a 2 cl [or tpt] duet. I have been unable to find it, but was never a great student either!! Will much appreciate any help. TKS, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

In order of progression (with a degree of overlap):
-----------------------------------

From each:

Klose Complete Method

Baermann III

Rose 40 Etudes

Rose 32 Etudes

Rose-Rode 20 Grand Studies

Cavallini 30 Caprices (Ricordi Ed.)

Baermann IV (with piano accomp.)

Baermann V (with piano accomp.)

Stark Arpeggio Studies

Polatschek Advanced Studies

JeanJean 18 etudes

JeanJean 16 Etudes Moderne

This is the progression that I followed, enjoyed, and presently use as teaching syllabus.

Gregory Smith

PS. An essential I forgot is the Bonade Compendium!

I'm glad Mr. Smith mentioned Baermann 4&5, I think these fine books are often ignored. I also would add Baermann 2, Rhythm Articulations by Pasquale Bona, the Langey Tutor, and the Bitsch Etudes and the Rueff Etudes. One last one , The 20th Century Clarinetist by Allen Seigel.

Only get Baermann V if you're a masochist. It's driving me nuts right now- honestly, Baermann wasn't the best of composers and you can tell (the pieces were originally written as concert works; they've been demoted to etude status for obvious reasons). Some parts are very awkward to play on a non-Albert system clarinet. They're good for your technique but can never be construed as "fun."

I am becoming rather fond of the Jeanjean 16 Modern Etudes, though, so I second that suggestion. They resemble Debussy.
