 Time Pieces by Robert Muczynski

Hello there,

My name is Matthew, and I am new to these boards. I just thought I would share my performance of "Time Pieces Op. 43" by Robert Muczynksi, with you all. I've been working on it since 3 weeks into the semester, and looking at it in the beginning I asked "How am I ever going to get through this?"--"Does Dr. Durst really think I can do this?"--Well, I sight read through it at the beg. of the semester with several mistakes, but it showed some form and direction, so he recommended it to me as not only for my recital piece for the semester, but for the Jury exam too.

I've spent countless amount of time working on the technique itself for the piece, as well as just lining up the rhythms with a metronome.

Today was a pretty good day as I rehearsed with our staff pianist. My dress run through was great overall in my opinion, but then the performance tonight, was almost a pinch down from that. While I had the same drive, the energy was definitely higher than this afternoons rehearsal, I felt something was lacking. Yes I missed a few things here and there, but they were very minor, and the musicians in the audience didn't know they were minor because my accompanist does a good job with her end. There was a time when I felt like I was "auto pilot" and I felt like I wasnt counting in time, and that I came in late...So it's been bugging me all night since I performed, but apparently it wasnt noticable if it happened. My friends mom was impressed with the concert, and said we were very good this evening.

So, sorry to sound like "its all about me here"--I wanted to ask you fellow clarinet players. Who here has played "Time Pieces" and what were your feelings as you learned it, and rehearsed it as well as performed it. This is a difficult piece music, and anyone who says its not, must be on something! Lot of going over the break, and octave jumps. I'm a huge fan of the piece now, and I cant wait to clean it even more for my Jury this Friday!--Definitely a piece I will use in my senior recital next year!

Give me your thoughts on Time Pieces.

Hi, I am not very familiar with the piece, but does anyone have any recommendations for the recording of this piece?

Thank you.

I have Nathan Williams's CD "Spontaneous Lines", which has Time Pieces. The playing is excellent.

Get Mitchel Lurie's playing of it which is on Crystal Records. It was written for him.

Also Tom Ridenour may (of course) have it recorded as he did the US premiere of it.

Time Pieces is a fantastic piece. I've both played it and heard it performed and, you're right, it's a very difficult piece. I hope your jury goes well! I can't say that when I played it I felt something lacking(!) but I certainly understand what you're talking about. The technique I found to be the hardest part of the piece, as Muzcynski seems to be able to exploit SO much of the clarinet's abilities that it's rediculous. It's the kind of piece (especially the 6/8 movement) that can go by so fast and it's so difficult to keep your timing. But seriously, don't feel bad about coming in late or whatever happened. To have played the piece is something in itself that you should be proud of! Again good luck on Friday!

Best,

Robert

I agree. I've played the piece and it's amazing. It seems that Muczynski somehow knew every awkward interval on the clarinet and made sure to use them all...
