Author: rbell96

Hi,

Could anyone recommend a recording of the Hindemith sonata?

It would be helpful too if you could say what else is on the CD.

Thanks,
Rob

There's a fine recording by Sabine Meyer: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/classical/B000026FDO/samples/ref=ed_sa_dp_1_1/302-0692742-9560028

Also on the CD is Martinu, Lutoslawski, Milhaud and Penderecki

Another good recording is done by Fred Ormand. Amazon link is

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JCIQ/qid=1058283427/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/103-1786723-6459843

This CD contains Hindemith's

Flute Sonata
Oboe Sonata
Clarinet Sonata
English Horn Sonata
Bassoon Sonata.

THe clarinet sonata is good, and it's nice to hear some sonatas for other instruments also (the english horn sonata is particularly good!). Highly recommended!

Hi,

I have just ordered the Meyer CD. I don't have recordings of the Milhaud or Penderecki so I thought it looked good.

Will just have to wait for it to arrive from Germany!!

Regards,
Rob

David - Hindemith had the knack of getting to the essence of an instrument's capabilities. His piano accompaniments to the various sonatas perfectly match the colour and flavour of the instrument they're associated with. I'm thinking here of the light, beautifully clear writing in the flute sonata, or the melancholy and sombre (though light) writing in his sonata for English Horn, et cetera. I adore his Clarinet Sonata and bemone the fact that he didn't compose another.
