Interestingly, the Melbourne Symphony (one of our finest orchestras - and one of the few top notch bands to be invited by Gergiev to attend the 300th birthday celebrations of St Petersburg by the Kirov) has found unlikely "bedfellows" in rock music.
The photo attached was taken during one of their classic meets rock concerts ... this has had a big effect (apparenlty) on audience perceptions and MSO have increased audience numbers to their more traditional concert scheduling.
I hope that other orchestras could see the benefit of this.
I think the "Kiss" masks they had on were very scarry!!
No, I'm not a fan of the Rock group Kiss, by the way.

At last a bit of class.
There was a "Kiss Army" in the early 80's which involved legions of fans dressing up in Kiss gear and painting their faces. I wonder whether the aughties are going to give birth to the "MSO Army" all equipped with white tie and tails.
The MSO is my favourite Australian Orchestra, unlike their sanitised Sydney cousin they still have the ability to play with some feeling.

That reminds me of our orchestra's efforts to attract a different, younger-than-white-haired audience that seems to be effective. For one of our Pops concerts they brought in the Jeans 'N Classics Band among other popular performers, and many were heard to say they're never coming back - but they received a standing ovation. It makes you wonder, who stood up? Not the older, more stayed, crowd. There's music for all, of course. But how can you argue with a standing ovation? They've also brought in East Coast fiddlers, Frank Leahy (who was given Don Messer's violin), and other really good groups, real crowd pleasers, all for the Pops series. (The classics series is left alone to be the classics, but with more visual arts included from time to time.) The orchestra's long-time members were mortified, but what are you going to do as tastes change as they will?

You've gotta love the MSO. Eve Newsome (2nd Oboe) is very interesting to work with. We do meditation and breathing classes. Right after that, she had to leave to get her makeup done!
