When you are done playing on a reed, hold it up to your ear. You can hear the cane drying out. It sounds like little crackling noices, similar to a wood fire, but much more quiet.

to get a job in NZSO you have to pass a hearing test- but for the clarinet players they just get them to listen to their reeds.....
