 Poll: Buffet Greenlines
Author: DezzaG

Do people think there is a difference between Regular Buffets(R13 is what I have compared) and Greenline? In particular to bightness of sound.

My opinion is the Greenline is much brighter, and would be a good choice for Jazz, esp. if playing outside it would be ideal.

Unfortunately, this is pretty useless without characterizations of
1) Which Greenline
2) Qualifications
3) Definition of "brightness"
and a host of other definitions which must be straightened out. Unless carefuilly thought out & set up, they're misleading at best.

If you want to set up a panel at a festival with 4 or 5 clarinets of each material (same models, though), a couple of players, and an audience that has no idea which clarinet is being played, I'd be more than happy to figure out the statistical relevance of your results.

Greenline clarinets are like any other type of clarinets. Some play well and some don't. Maybe the greenlines you tried were "brighter" but that doesn't mean they all are. One of the best R-13A clarinets I tried at IMS was a Greenline instrument.

I've been pretty impressed with those owned by friends. I would really like to hear the experiences of some Greenline owners/players. Speak up, folks!

I have played a Greenline R13 Bb for the last two years, after switching to it from my regular wood R13 of ca. 1972 vintage. I selected it from about half a dozen which I tried. I prefer it to my wood R13, which is an excellent clarinet in its own right. I use my Greenline in orchestral, wind ensemble and chamber music settings and it works well in all of them. A decided advantage is outdoor summer concerts where the instrument remains completely stable in changing temperature conditions.

I know this is highly subjective, but I find my Greenline to be darker, or less bright, sounding than my wood R13. There seems to be a lessened presence of higher overtones in the sound compared to my wood R13, but I suppose that could only be confirmed by a scientific analysis. Based on my experience, I wouldn't have any hesitation in recommending the Greenline to any serious player.

BTW, I'm using a wood Chadash barrel on mine, along with a Pyne Jx mouthpiece. Cheers,

Hardreed

Just adding to this post again since I just came home with a greenline festival clarinet. I think I have become the biggest advocate of greenline clarinets overnight. If they can play just as well or better than a wood clarinet, and it is also a good way to conserve the blackwood and not to deal with the troubles of cracking.

Well I hope that you and other Greenline users will keep us informed on how they do. I'm saving hard for a pair.

My R-13 Greenline had a darker tone than my Festival, but not quite as dark as my regular wood R-13. I really enjoyed the Greenline--especially the lack of having to worry about using it outdoors in extreme temperatures. It was also a very well made instrument.

I've been playing on a Greenline Bb R13 for around two years, and I love it! (I purchased it after my regular R13 cracked, and it's been nice not to have to worry about that problem occurring again.) I've used it outdoors, in chamber ensembles, as well as in our symphony and wind symphony. I've found it to be excellent in all settings.

As far as brightness goes....that just depends on the individual player. My Greenline has a much richer sound than my previous instrument, but I tried several different Greenlines before I found one that worked well for me.

Overall, I'd have to say that I am very happy with my Greenline....and I'm saving up to buy an A Greenline soon!
