I'm a 42 year old returning clarinet player and was wondering does the clarinet have some kind of State or National Certificate of Merit program like the piano?
If it does, where do I find more information? My teacher is a working professional in L.A. but is not signed up with any type of "levels" program.

I've never heard of one for clarinet but I also have never heard of it for piano. What is it exactly?

It's not exactly like hiring an ASE mechanic to work on your Volvo.
Furthermore, you could hire on with an instructor of tremendous professional standing that couldn't teach their way out of a wet paper sack.
No real way to tell without talking to other students.
I found my instructor (two years!) by asking at the local sheet music store.
They were not the least hesitant to warn me off the cranks that advertise as instructors.
I would avoid any school that tells you when they have an open slot, or primarily caters to high school kids. (Puppy mills)

I believe that The Certificate of Merit program for piano is a testing organization run by piano teachers that certify a student to their level of technical ability and knowledge of theory.
My son, who is 8 just past the 1st level. He was tested at the local State college. A few hundred kids (and adults) were going through the testing through out a Saturday.

The music educators association in Colorado runs a solo and ensemble program every year for grades 6-12 where players of all band and orchestral instruments are ranked by certified judges. I don't know whether there is an equivalent for students who are not in those grades. However, one way to find out would be to call your nearest university with a music program and ask to talk with their clarinet professor. He or she should be able to tell you about any state programs in your area. One of your local high school band directors may also be a good source of information about activities run by the California music educators association. (Note, local university professors are also great sources for finding names of teachers if you're looking. We found my son's saxophone teacher through a recommendation from a CU sax professor. High school directors are other great sources...my son't clarinet teacher came from a list a local high school directory had.)

MTAC (Music Teachers' Association, California) has their certificate of merit program. To participate your teacher must be a member of MTAC. See their website at www.mtac.org (sorry, I don't know how to link).
