I was just reading the "4 notes on a stem" topic and it got me wondering..
Are multiphonics on the clarinet possible? I know it's possible on the flute; it's kinda neat.
If it's at all possible it'd be really interesting for me to try 'em out. What do y'all think of them, if you've heard it be done or can do it yourself?

Multiphonics, slap tonguing, microtones, growling, etc...are becoming common place in contemporary clarinet solos.
If yu are interested, there have been a number of books and articles written on "extended technique" for clarinet...GBK

William O. Smith is a recognized authority and has written a book on the subject. I had a chance to hear him demonstrate multiphonics with a great deal of control.

Probably one of the better overviews on extended clarinet techniques is "New Directions for Clarinet" by Philip Rehfeldt: UC Press. It includes W.O. Smith's fingering guide.
At <ahref="http://lachesis.caltech.edu/jayeaston/sound_clips_shortcut.html">Soundfiles</a> Jay Easton has a variety of sound files of various woodwind techniques including clarinet multiphonics.
I'll warn you that when I began playing around with multiphonics, the groundhog that lived under my house, committed suicide by stepping in front of a garbage truck, the neighbor's cat hasn't been seen since and two field mice that inhabited my pantry walked into the room carrying a sign that said, "Please kill us now!"

Not exactly the same subject but watched a video performance by "Chicago" last night and the flautist did some pretty interesting sound variations

With an abundance of curiousity, I made a ?patent search? on USPTO databases using clarinet AND tones, retrieving a reasonable 152 pats, most prob. synthesizer electronis techniques, but found a Rovner pat on a multitonal [?] ligature which I'll look into along with other retrievals of interest. Hopefully the literature suggested above may help a search. Don
