My son wants to play clarinet, however someone said that it can cause damage to his cleft palette. He was born with a cleft of the soft palette. Does anyone have any information about children with cleft palettes and playing an instrument

My oldest son was born bi-lateral clef, but his palate was intact. He is a very good prercussionist at the age of 14.
I had a young man that wanted to play clarinet a few years ago that had surgery for the palate. Other than a slight amount of air escaping through the nasal cavity when he tired, he played fine. He gave up the instrument after a couple of years. I don't think it was because of his physical condition but rather the "ordor" of perfume and "gasoline" got to him as happens to most 15-16 year old boys.
