Congratulations to both son and father. Having children in the arts is a very interactive and rewarding process for the whole family and brings about a pride and respect for all parties (especially in my case where the child is much more talented than the father).

Congratulations to Stephen & the other musicians involved.
Not being familiar with the US educational system, can you tell me what stage this is at. How long has he been studying at CIM and how long left to go, or is this the final stage? How long do students carry on over there. I think they tend to study longer than in UK.

Final stage (4th year). He just received his B.A. .

Post-grad study at the Tokyo Geidai University (Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) with Professor Yuji Murai, along with working with his mentor Kazuo Fujii.

Well done Stephen! That was an excellent recital. I think you have a wonderful tone, superb technique, and play very musically.
I hope you don't mind if I give a little constructive criticism? I think the main thing that you could concentrate on now is your intonation. You tended to play a bit sharp sometimes, especially in quiet sections, eg. the 2nd movement of the Weber. I would recommend doing daily intonation exercises, eg. playing intervals above a "drone" to hear in which direction you need to push notes, and just to train your ears and reactions for intonation corrections.
Please know that this small criticism is given with the best intentions. I think that playing in tune is one of the hardest aspects of clarinet playing. If you can just improve this aspect of your playing, you'll be an first-class player!

Thank you for your comment. Actually, I have been working on my intonation recently since I do tend to go sharp a lot. I notice it more when I listen to myself play rather then while I'm playing. I'll need to work on that. I agree that one of the hardest aspects of playing is playing in tune, either in a solo, chamber, or especially in an orchestra setting. My instrument could also use some work.

Superb playing and congrats to Stehpen and Dad!
I really enjoyed the ambience and tone you played with all of the works ....I feel you really dug into the Weber nicely and few players get into the style effectively.
I like the way you low register sounds and felt in accord with Liquorice very much, but also know this aspect of clarinet playing is the hardest to master.
I think you really are extremely musical and the teaching you are receiving is top notch no doubt.
Great flexibility and a nice natural style.
