Can someone please tell me about this "larger range" clarinet?

How far down does one of these things go? Is it an alto or something?

That's a basset clarinet in A; search here and in the Klarinet Archives for more information.

Nick, Buffet, Selmer, Leblanc, Ripamonti and some german makers (as H. Wurlitzer and Schwenk und Seggelke), make basset clarinet to play Mozart's Concerto and Quintet original versions.
Stephen Fox makes extensions for normal Bb or A clarinets, and an "Stadler" basset clarinet, that is to say, an historical basset in A.
