Hi,
I got an old copy of the above etudes recently and several of the markings found within the studies are not familiar. I refer to the several instances of Bb 5 having either a 2, 4, or tiny circle above it, D6 represented with a 4 above, F5 with the tiny circle, and F 6 with a small case d above. I suspect that since there are some low Ebs in another spots, a full Boehm is probably required.
My street sense tells me that the 4 might be a suggestion for the TR 1 and 1 Bb, the tiny circle might be a BIS fingering of some sorts, and the 2 might be the familiar. Since this is probably a full Boehm, the 1 and 3 Bb might be the tiny circle but for the D????
I plan to play these etudes using an assortment of Bb fingerings but can't figure out the tiny circle above the F5 or teh d above the F6; I've thought through the oboe finerings but..... Perhaps these are some Oehler fingerings mixed in with Boehm or all these are all Oehler completely. The fact that the book was printed in Austria may be significant.
Thanks for the help.

It sounds to me as if they're all Oehler fingering suggestions.
Bb5 can be played with front or side keys or LH 1&3 forked (the little circle)
D6 can be played with the 3rd RH side key
F5 RH 1&3 forked etc.
The only one I'm not sure of is the small d above F6 I presume it refers to the long fingering which is the same as Boehm.

Hi Jez,
This helps a lot. However, the small d above F6 is proceeded by C6 and followed by an E6 so using the long F would not make much sense on the Boehm (and would be impossible with an articulated G#).
These must be some Oehler fingerings as you suggest. Most of all, I just wanted to make sure that I was not missing a very obscure ornament of some kind.
Thanks,
HRL
