I'm a beginner and play mostly by ear any style that I can. I play mostly for myself and any neighbour that happens to be in ear shot. I play with a Yamaha 26 II , a Yamaha 4C mouth piece and 2 1/2 Vandoren reeds. Right know, I feel quite satisfied that I am able to play to some degree of recognition of the music.
After reading this forum several times and pariticipating I get a little intimidated by the pros that seem to have all the advice.
My question is that if one has the resources, how should one progress in the pursuit of improving the quality of sound and in what stages should new and better equipement be bought. A list of progressive instruments and stages would be appreciated

There is nothing wrong with your current gear, for several years!
An entry level horn with professional adjustment may be far superior to the stuff Pros played in the past... the YCL26 is a culmination of 100 years in design improvements.
The reed is most important (from a mechanical standpoint) in generating your sound... you can only play out from what it offers.
Not all reeds in your box will be great. Check out Larry Guy's (or one of the other excellent texts offered in the resource section) book on adjusting and breaking in reeds.
Lessons will be the next most important investment in making for a good overall sound, with fundamentals strong to serve all sorts of playing.
A mouthpiece will help, but you may want to have an instructor, first to help you choose one that plays well for YOU - one size does not fit all!
Play your current horn until Fall (2004), when demand for entry stuff peaks...
That money you earmarked for a top quality professional horn? Get regular lessons for a year, and you'll be miles ahead.
