 Tying a Shoestring Ligature
Author: Steve

I've seen instructions posted before on how to "tie" a shoestring ligature. Are there any illustrations on the web? Also, how long should the shoestring be? I've been experimenting with a 36" version and it seems to have sufficient length.

David Pino, in his book THE CLARINET AND CLARINET PLAYING, says to use a flat 27" shoestring. Cut the aiglet off of one end, and wind the wind the shoestring around the m.p. from the base of the reed, toward the tip. When you run out of shoestring, tuck the remaining aiglet back through a couple of the turns to secure it.
If it works, let me know. I just read about it today.

I wonder if that was the book that I read 20+ years ago.
I don't bother to cut the aglets off, especially if I am going to have to put the lace back in my shoe after the gig. (I really like the string laces, but somehow end up losing them.) I seem to recall reading that there should be about 6 turns around the mpc. I only tuck through the last turn, not several. Once I wind, I push all of the coils down just a little to tighten.

Notice how you can adjust your reed after it has been wrapped. You can get it just right.

Steve -

This is what works for me. I use a round string rather than a flat one.

1. Hold the mouthpiece (or better, the mouthpiece and barrel) vertical with the lay facing toward you.

2. Put the reed in place and hold it with your left thumb.

3. Lay the string alongside the right side of the butt.

4. Pinch the string by rolling your left thumb slightly to the right.

5. Hold tight with your left thumb and take a couple of clockwise turns at the top, holding each turn in place with the tip of your left thumb.

6. Re-align the reed.

7. Turn the mouthpiece horizontal with the tip pointing to the right.

8. Take 3 or 4 more turns, pulling them tight.

9. Re-align the reed in its final position.

10. Continue wrapping. Keep it tight, with the extra string from the beginning running alongside the right side of the butt.

11. When you get to maybe 2 turns left to go, hold the wrapped part with your left thumb and take one really loose turn. Tuck the end of the string under this loose turn and pull tight.

It gets to be easy after you do it a few times, and nothing plays better.

Good luck.

I've been using a shoestring for the past year, and I must say that putting it on is the least difficult part.

First, you need a shoestring that is less than 36" preferably flat. Experiment, but I find that looping the lace around the mouthpiece four times provides the best results, so base the length from there.

What I do is cut off one end, and use a lighter to sort of cause the string to melt together, so that it won't unravel later. The shoestring lasts longer this way.

Then, place the cut off end a little past the lower right hand corner of the reed as it is on the mouthpiece. Then, begin looping it around by pulling it diagonally left() upwards. From that point, start circling the mouthpiece so that the lace comes out looking even near the bottom of the reed. Then just tuck the remaining plastic end through the last loop you made.

There you go, let me know if you have any problems. You might find the results quite pleasing. I know I did.
