 string ligatures
Author: R13A

hi everyone [happy]

I'm considering trying a Pyne string ligature. (But to try it I have to buy it )Has anyone had experience with it ???

Some of my concerns are : stretchability, fit for G Smith Kaspar mp which has a smaller diameter than my old Chedville and also effect on sound (brighter ?)

I'd appreciate your comments.

regards
dennis

I am currently using a Pyne string ligature and I personally, i feel it's better in terms of tone produced. I use a Vandoren B45 so it fits well. I dun knoe about yours though. It only comes in one size. In the beginning, it might feel tight, but after a long time, the ligature will soften and it will be easier to slip on the mp

I have used the Pyne ligature for about a year now with my Greg Smith
Chedeville style mp and am very pleased with it. As the previous post states
it is stiff when you are first "molding" it to the mp but after a short while it
become more flexible. It's very easy to fit on and off even when switching quickly to "A" clarinet.

I used to use any old piece of string or shoelace, and I never thought it necessary to modify the mouthpiece. For some reason, It would always get left behind and I would end up taking another shoelace from my shoe (well, someone else's shoe, if I could get away with it.) A year or so ago I started using velcro. Seems to work as well, seems to stay in the case better and takes less time to put on. (I wrap the mouthpiece without the reed, pop it off, place the reed on the mpc's table, and slide the velcro 'ring' over the mpc & reed. I don't undo the velcro between sessions, and instead slip the loop off and on until it loosens over time. The only problem with velcro is that metal mpc covers don't fit over them. (So I use plastic ones

I didn't even know a string lig was advertised to be sold. I figured most people would just find a piece of string somewhere. But I guess for non-german MPs, the ones without the grooves, that this Pyne lig probably has a better way to stay on.

On another note, I was wondering if anyone has tried using rubber bands. Either one rubber band wrapped tightly, or two small rubber "O" rings. One at the bottom of the reed, and one just before the 'vamp' (correct?) where the reed begins to file away towards the tip.

I've always wondered about this, but haven't really looked for an O ring that would fit my mouthpiece. In my mind it seems to work. In my mind that is . . .

The Pyne string ligature is a pre-woven system. Check out the Pyne web site (http://www.pyne-clarion.com), especially since they're sponsors, too.

I have used a pair of rubber O-rings as described above. They work OK as do all the other "novel" ligatures mentioned but I find the single screw fabric types present much less hassle.....except for the lig.cap problems they present such as "popping off" and case space storage.
