 Big Easy Visit/Report

TKS for earlier advice, it was much fun. We heard snatches of music from many bars/clubs, but the best cl-playing was by Doreen and group at NW Jackson Square, open, busking, in front of the Cabido [old Spanish meeting house]. She has a fine command of the registers, in partic. the altissimo, wish I could play as well. She plays a Buff E 13?, with an older Hite mp, well in tune, what a "feel" for trad. jazz/dixie, great sop-saxer [tenor on their CD I think] 1Stop, they have recorded 2, she sings too. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

While we tend to concentrate on mostly the well known clarinetists, isn't it a scary revelation to learn that there are so many great clarinetists out there that are totally 'unknown'. Like my friend and local Milwaukee/Chicago clarinet great, Chuck Hedges, says--"Just when you think that you are getiing "good", you run into some unknown that blows you off the stand." (BTW--he "did it" to Buddy DeFranco a few years ago at the Fox Lake (WI) Jazz Festival honoring the legacy of trumpet player Bunny Berigan)

Thanks for the report and.....wish I was there also!!!!!

(did you get to hear Pete??)

No, Wm, not Pete, dern it. Our group was our chemist-son, daughter and son-in-law and their granddaughter [our G GD !!], so we had limitations, but had some great food [ $$'s]. We wandered the F Q to the degree we could, parking is an expensive nightmare, but except for rain Wed.PM, was very comfortable, lots of tours, fun but tiring for oldsters like the BW and me. Doreen's CD is by a slightly diff [earlier?] group with tpt; she had several tmbs, one valve, a great sop-saxer and a washboard [rhythm] and bass drum on the J S street . Heard Tiger Rag and others on both. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Doreen is one of the three things that makes Jackson Square great. The other two, of course, are Cafe du Monde and Ben & Jerry's.

Rite y'are, Tim, your other 2 picks were the best, we ate Po' Boys in all 3 , the rest. in the SW corner was least good! The Benigs [sp?] were also good, cheap!! All in all, a good time was had by all, including looking in antique and old-book stores. Quite a different place. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
