My very special friend is trying to find a college that has a contemporary or modern voice program in the Tri-State area (PA too!). I figured that since MANY of the people on this board have been to good music schools or are knowledgable that perhaps you can help give ideas of schools.
She currently has graduated from a two year junior college, but doesn't want to sing opera or classical. She doesn't want a profession in opera or classical, but would rather study contemporary and get occasional gigs.
We live in NJ and she wants a place close to home that she can commute too, but she'll live away if she has to. Just close enough to come home on the weekend if she chooses. Thanks for the help.

NJ - Westminster Choir College (part of Resseler I think)
NY - Postdamn, Hartwick, SUNY Purchase
CT - Hartt, Weslyan
All good schools will develop an approach or suite you with a teacher to your satisfy your needs. Just ask, sometimes you can make your own major if you're lucky you'll get the diploma in the field you applied. Good Luck!

ctt489... A small correction.
As a graduate ('71) of the Crane School of Music, the college is Potsdam (part of the SUNY system of schools).
Renee Fleming (Class of '81) is currently enjoying a well deserved opera career...GBK

Westminster is now part of Ryder University. It is an excellent school, but specializes in liturgical music.
If Boston isn't too far, Berklee School of Music specializes in contemporary music. http://www.berklee.edu/
In the NJ and Philly area you might look into Rowan Univ (I'm a grad) Temple Univ in Philly, Westchester Univ outside of Philly in PA (my son is a clarinet major there) it has an excellent voice program and jazz studies, Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers Univ. There are others of course, but I'm familiar with these from our school search last year.
