 ligature position on mouthpiece
Author: JamesE
Date:   2003-03-19 02:18

In the thread "thoughts on adjusting reeds" there was one post about moving the reed around on the mouthpiece.

How about the ligature? Something I've always wondered about. With the reed placed on the mouthpiece, the ligature can be placed close to the front, or close to the bottom, or somewhere in between. How do you select the correct position?

Thanks,

You can select the correct position for YOU by experimenting with different positions. There is no "right" ligature position it varies with many factors which could include thae mouthpiece and reeds used. When you find the position that sounds the best for you, then keep using it.

I move mine around all the time. I've found that different reeds require the ligature to be placed further up or down depending on how they play. Experiment and see what you come up with. Generally, if a reed is a little stiff, I move the ligature down and vice versa for one that is a little soft. Sometimes, this will affect clarity in articulation on some reeds as well, but not all the time.

Now, this is merely my oppinion based on my own experience. Many others may feel completely differently. EXPERIMENT! We all know that any information like this is subjective to the mouthpiece, reed brand/strength, type of ligature, etc., etc., etc.. One just can't apply one general rule to ligature positions as reeds change on a daily basis. Your best reed today just might be your worst reed tomorrow and there is nothing that will make that fact go away.

Good Luck!!

I believe what matters is the position of the lig. relative to the reed, not to the mpc. What do others think?

There is no better clarinetist than Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr. She sets her ligagure as high as possible.

There is no better clarinetist than Stanley Drucker. He sets his ligagure as low as possible.

You experiment and do what works best for you.

Best regards.

I thought that the line on the mouthpiece was a guide to recommended ligature placement. I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone but it might be a good place to start.

There's another factor as well. If your mouthpiece has a concave reed table (as many do), and not a flat one, optimum mouthpiece performance is said to demand that the ligature pressure be right over the middle--i.e. the deepest point--of the concavity. And this is a difficult matter to judge.

I tend to set my ligature fairly low, finding that I seem to get more reed vibration. If I want a darker ,more centred sound, I will at times raise it quite a bit higher....I tend to play it set fairly low generally however.....
