As I have posted before, my Patricola Eb is causing me many problems and I have been searching for new instruments. I have been contacted by Peter Spriggs who has 2 R13 Eb's in stock, both have recieved his setup process. I am interested in purchasing one as the price is quite competetive with the price I'd be paying in Australia for a new one (when they FINALLY get a shipment in), but my concern is that Peter wants full payment before the instrument is sent out of Canada, therefore I don't get to trial it. I have been assured that it will be a good instrument by both Peter and a couple of his clients, but on the odd chance that I want to return it, the cost will be a few hundred dollars plus paperwork. Would I be doing the wrong thing buy paying for it and not trying it first?

Seems to me a approval/audition period of two weeks would not be inappropriate for the transaction. The only cost should be the actual shipping charges plus proper insurance both ways--you paying both ways. Peter receiving full payment before shipping is reasonable, but I would expect a full refund upon safe return, if the instrument is not satisfactory to your needs. Paper work costs adding up to a "few hundred" dollars seems a bit "excessive"--even for those high volume mega stores we all know.
R13s are great instruments and if Peters cost is a "few hundred" dollars below the mega store costs, maybe you are farther ahead. You just have to do the math or play, "Lets Make a (better) Deal."
Rule of Thumb (either hand)--NEVER BUY BEFORE YOU TRY!!!!!!!
