Hi,
I got my clarinet appraised a while ago, and the guy was amazed: "i havn't seen a Buffet 55000 Liberty in years" I've tryed to do some research but can't find anything about any 55000 liberties. I want some info on it but can't find it. He also said they were the finest clarinets ever made. I'd like to try to verify this. Its the buffets with the serial numbers in the 55000 range, thus there were only 1000 ever made.

I've never hear the term used before, so here's just a little info and perhaps a hunch. A 55XXX Buffet was probably made around 1956. From the end of WWII to around 1957, no accurate records remain for Buffet's production by serial number. It is possible that these post-WWII clarinets were called "liberty" instruments, either widely or in the repairman's circle of friends.
As far as them being the best ever made, I'm afraid that was one repairman's opinion - and it probably isn't shared by the majority of the clarinet world. Buffet, like many manufacturers, made some great clarinets and some mediocre ones. Like Forest Gump said, "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what's inside." - until you play one (clarinets, of course. He was talking about clarinets, wasn't he???).
So you may have a really nice almost 50-yr. old clarinet, or a mediocre almost 50-yr old clarinet. Take that puppy out, make it sing, and decide for yourself. At the very least, it's a professional model clarinet.

You did fine. Let us know if you ever track down any more info on "Liberty".
