 Mouthpiece facing
Author: Wendy

What are the playing characteristics of different length facings? I know that everything else being equal, a longer facing needs a harder reed, but ignoring that for a moment, what are the reasons one would prefer a longer or shorter facing? Does it have to do with embouchure? Do players who put more mouthpiece in their mouths want a longer facing? Or is it something else?

Wendy...Read this article. Tom Ridenour explains it much better than I can attempt to do:

It's interesting to note that, as explained in Ridenour's article, a longer facing requires a harder reed, something which is often misunderstood.
