I've tried slightly harder reeds, but enjoy playing the medium (3) reeds. I got my hands on some sample Gigliotti Plus reeds and I think they are pretty darned good. A good thick reed equivilant (the Gigliotti Advantage is the regular thickness reed). I'd prefer to stay with that, and to use my Gigliotti P facing mouthpiece and Gigliotti ligature (anyone see a pattern developing?)
It was suggested before to try a more open gigliotti if I like the accoustics so much, but I really can't afford to buy a new mouthpiece. The P34, 2, and 3 all cost $$$$. And I can't even afford to mail order one for trial. However I have heard that refacing doesn't cost much. I figure, if the refacing doesn't work, and I have to buy a new mouthpiece ANYWAY, I only lost a few bucks, whereas if I buy a new one, and a refacing WOULD have worked, I lost a lot of money.
How do I do it? I know there are plenty of sponsors here that do refacing, but wouldn't it be a hassle to send the mouthpiece in the mail and have them reface it and send it back? And what if it's not quite right? Do I send it again?
Also, I found someone close to home that does MP refacing. He does it with a music shop, but would it be better to send it away to someone on this board who has more experience? Or would it not matter?
