My friend has trouble with her Buffet E-13. She has had cork removed from the lower portion of her barrel several times, but it keeps expanding far too much. Cork grease doesn't ease the problem even temporarily, so she can't push in her barrel all the way so that she can be in tune. Any advice?

It might not be the cork. The wood might be binding in the socket. She should take it into a GOOD repair tech and get it looked at and fixed.

This sounds like a seasonal problem... does it happend when the weather changes?
A little off the tenon 'shoulder' should do the trick.
It may also be useful to relieve the barrel receiver a bit, too.

wood expands with moisture. try keeping it as dry as possible and oiled when needed. also should be looked at by a proffesional. sounds like it needs the tenon and/or barrel sanded. cork doesnt really expand much if at all. and being cork it sould fit tight if expanded and compress fairly easily not stopping it from going on all the way

That's because I'm the friend she's talking about. she asked the question for me and then told me about this website, but she wasnt sure if she asked the question right so I asked myself.

Did you check to see if she asked it right, and whether the answers were there? For future, repeated conversations here make it mucky for people who later 'search' for information. :-)

Yes, i did check and found out that it wasnt my barrel that was expanding, but the top cork of my upper section, as i stated in my question. But i understand what you mean by "mucky" so i'm sorry if i caused anyone any inconvenience and i'll remember to try to continue threads next time. thanks for the info by the way.
