What do people think to Karl Leister's 1967 recording of the Brahms Quintet with the Amadeus Quartet.

Interesting document. I always enjoyed it.
Leister at the time was playing antique clarinets built at the turn of the century with a wooden mouthpiece from that same period. You can also hear this on his Mozart concerto recording with Kubelik.
He later switched to modern instruments and mouthpieces, and his playing changed dramatically as a result.
I had him autograph that very record label when I met him and he DID sign it, but said I should get his later recording as it represented his 'modern' style of clarinet playing.
The old instruments have audible response and intonation inconsistencies compared to the later horns he played. . .no surprise. But what is amazing is how well he actually played on them.

Flawless -- but emotionally so restrained that I almost find it boring. Can't fault Leister though --- he's awesome.
