Hi, I'm wondering if anyone as ever come across a serial number list for Hawkes & Sons. The sneezy serial number page only lists the Boosey side of the pre-boosey & hawkes instruments (as does the music trader site), and even boosey.com will only allow you to select "brass" if you want to look up hawkes serial numbers. I've got a very interesting matched set (a and bflat) of hawkes & sons lp excelsor sonorous class alberts in hard rubber, in almost unused condition and am really curious about their date of manufacture. They have some unusual and advanced features (for alberts) so I'm guessing they're later but if I use the boosey serial list (they're 13814 and 13825) it dates them to 1899. Also, if anyone wants to have some non-sneezy discussion about alberts, simple systems/muellers, or oehlers please contact me via e-mail. I'd love to go on in detail but I'll spare the sneezy server!

I know of no such list but would like to find one as well. What i do know is that my pair of pre WW1 Hawkes Excelsior clarinets have four digits in their serial number, whereas my full boehm c.1920 Hawkes has five digits and the LP stamping. (I've always thought it strange that the later one was stamped LP but not the earlier.) From this I would guess your instruments are c.1920s. Do yours play nicely?

I just happen to have my H&S Bb "simple system" 9 I have a companion A as well) on the desk as I write. The serial # is: 12098 and according to the answer supplied via the B&H website - http://www.boosey.com/Instruments/Startframe.htm - my instruments are vintage 1930.
I would have thought much earlier actually, but I gave 'em the # and there you go! Incidentally my jobs have only 2 rollers and 12 keys.

Check Rendall's "The Clarinet". It gives the date that the comapny adopted the name Hawkes & Son (Prior to that it was just Hawkes or Hawkes and Co.). That will give you the earliest date. Then the company became part of Boosey in (I believe) about 1936.

I have a simple system Hawkes and Son. I'll check the serial number tonight (I'm at work). The number is four digits.

Mine is Hawkes & Son number 2962. Rendall gives the start date of "Boosey & Hawkes" as 1930.

My clarinet is, according to Boosey site, 1930. I'm wondering if this is some kind of default "antique" date. Everything seems to be 1930 (see above).
