Open mouthpiece: more distance between the tip of the reed and the tip of the mouthpiece. Closed: less distance. See www.vandoren.com, click on products.

If you want to know how your mp compares get a flat piece of metal or something, about the same size as a reed hold it on with a lig. and you can measure the exact tip-opening with feeler gauges.

Whether or not the mouthpiece is closed or open, it can depend greatly on the measuring tools one uses if you are looking for precise measurements.

Be sure to have feeler guages or measuring guages check once in a while by the manufacturer.
