What tunes pop into your mind when you hear the term "jazz standard"?
Are there any lesser known tunes that should be played more? I am particularly partial to "Skylark;" the melody and chord changes are beautiful. I also like "I'm Old Fashioned."

I don't know what you might consider lesser known. Some "jazz standards" that come to mind that may have the same feel are:
There is No Greater Love- Isham Jones
You'd be So nice to Come Home To- Porter
Laura- Raksin
All the Things You Are- Kern
What's New?- Haggart
Are these too well known? -Martin

Gosh, please include Stardust, One O'Clock Jump, the many T and J Dorseys, Harry James, Count Basie, Miller, Goodman, Wayne King!, Cole Porter, G and I Gershwin, etc, etc. Have recently had here a '40-60's dance band combo [7 piece] book of some 400 tunes, at least half are "standards" to me ! Don

There's got to be thousands of great lesser known standards. I think Stella by Starlight is underrated, and Lush Life is an excellent though frightfully challanging piece. My Daddy Rocks Me With One Steady Role is one I've been meaning to transcribe; the Jimmy Noone version kicks ass.

It's fun if you can find an old fake book - something other than the Real Book, or even the Real Book - and just play through tune after tune and listen for something that catches your ear.

Standard jazz tunes are songs that are "universally" accepted as such and of course, that can mean anything depending on what part of the world one is standing in at the time. However, here are a few "safe" ones off the top:

- Body and Soul
- I Got Rhythm
- April in Paris
- Lover Man
- Oh, Lady be Good
- Poor Butterfly
- Embraceable You
- Autumn Leaves
- Our Love is Here to Stay
- What'll I Do
- In a Sentimental Mood
- Ain't Misbehavin'
- That Darn Dream
- When Sunny Gets Blue
- Here's That Rainy Day
- Goodbye
- Memories of You
- It Had to be You
- Summer Time
- What is This thing Called Love
- Sweet Georgia Brown
- Avalon
- Oh, That's Enough Already...

A fine list, Ken, sure can recall them all, and there are always more, depending on individual experience. When I ran a 4 piece combo, I had some 50 listed with playable [piano] keys, and dancers were always asking for more!! Ah, memories, Don

Many of the others already mentioned, but I'll add A Child is Born and 'Round Midnight. Wicked-hard changes, but oh-so-cool when it clicks. Spain -- played too often by those who can't cut it, but another must-have.
