Hello all. I am relearning the clarinet after 30 years. My intent is to play in community bands, and then who knows what might follow. I am currently renting a plastic beginner clarinet. I have an opportunity to purchase a new Yamaha at a discount. I think I would like an intermediate model. Are there any recommendations on which model to purchase from those of you in the know? Thanks in advance.

Pat,

You'll get lots of good advice here.

As long as you stick with one of the big 4 makers you can't really make a bad choice. The big four makers are Buffet, Leblanc, Selmer, and Yamaha. They all make great intermediate and pro models.

If you want a simple alternative to buying new, I would like to suggest you look at John Butler's used clarinets at:
<http://www.cork-and-pad.woodwind.org/#Instruments for Sale>

He currently has several intermediate models available. John is highly respected in the clarinet community and is a sponsor at this site.

Welcome back to clarineting. You'll find there are others here that have also returned to clarineting after a very long break.

Pat...you can also find new Yamahas at discount prices on eBay from reputable music shops. I doubt that anyone pays list price on most new horns. My history and aspirations are similar to yours and I would suggest you give much thought about switching from a plastic horn to a wood one.

Hi Pat,

If you look around, you can probably find a used professional model for not too much more than an intermediate clarinet. Not that there is anything wrong with a Noblet, Selemer Signet, etc, it is just that you will have a horn that will not have to ever step up from and you can enjoy the pleasures of the best that a clarinet has too offer.

Congratulations !!

you've received good advice. There are some issues you may perhaps need to consider. You may want to have a knowledgeable player play test your intended new clarinet. Finances: the cost of a new clarinet will invaribly be more than that of a new one of better quality.
I wholeheartedly agree with Madvax's suggestion of contacting John Butler. John has an impeccable reputation for his honesty and workmanship. Any of the clarinets he has for sale have been 'gone over', repadded if necessary, wood reconditioned and keywork adjusted.

regards,
dennis

I second madvax. I picked up a wonderful Leblanc professional model from John Butler for $500. When you buy from him you are assured that the clarinet has been very well set up, which may be more than you can expect with a hew horn.

Hi, Pat -

I can't add anything to the excellent advice you've already gotten. I can, and do, add my support and best wishes to you as you return to playing.

Happy Tootin' :)

Hi Pat,

As a returning player myself, also after 30 years, I think you'll find that if you play a few months before buying a new instrument your ability will develop and you'll be better able to chose an instrument that fits you. Good luck and welcome back!

I too would suggest a used pro model. I picked up a wonderful pro clarinet for 350. I had my tech put another 140 in oiling it, and a thorough once over. It is a delightful instrument. It is my outdoor clarinet for city band events. I have played on intermediate clarinets but felt I "outgrew" them too fast.

Have fun and welcome back,
Jean
