i've played the Finzi...what do you want to know??? I found (and was advised by my teacher) that if you want to perform them, they work well as kind of 'light relief' between the heavy stuff (choose 2 or 3 that you like). Alternatively, they can also work to showcase your whole technique: fast and flashy - no.5; sustained and calm - no. 3; and the 1st mvt is also impressive. i can't remember the others off hand.
Anyway, if you want to know anything more, just ask!!!
I hope this helps...
good luck!

Laura

YES, I am presently studying. Recently their was a very excellent article in the ICA's "The Clarinet". I enjoyed it and I found it gave me perspective that I wouldn't otherwise have.

Hi!
I've also played the Finzi... but just mvmt.'s 1, 3, and 5. Let us know if you have specific questions. It's been a few years, but I loved the piece. Hope I can be of help.

At the moment I am working on the Tartini "Concertino". My clarinet professor has decided that all of his freshman students are going to work on baroque music. I like the piece because it is not too difficult technically, but it requires a lot of musicality in the 1st and 3rd movements. I especially like the 2nd movement, though. It's a great piece, so I recommend it.

I've played most of the "Five Bagetelles" they range from quite easy (the Carol) to quite hard (The Fugetta) but are all great little pieces. I particularly like No 1 and the Forlana. Give them a go I think you will like them.

I performed the Tartini/Jacob with a string orchestra last summer. It isn't only available for clarinet and piano.

I wound up checking out the Tartini Violin Sonatas. It is interesting to note the changes in this version for clarinet. Gordon Jacob varied some tempi, as well as took out a "trill motive" in the last movement. I put that back in, mainly because I was asked to perform these pieces by a violinist.

Unless I'm mistaken there were some 20th century harmonies/chord substitutions which made the pieces less Baroque than I had expected.

Great pieces! I would recommend them highly.
