Mics for a contra

Toric's thread below reminded me of a problem I'm working with on my contra and daughters's bass. Trying to amplify the large clarinets with just one mic seems to bring out some notes quite well while others are weak and so-so. Has anyone here tried using two or three small clip-ons on the big clarinets to get all the sound? If so what were your results?

See my post in the other mic thread. If you multi-mic a contra with clip-ons you are going to get all kinds of weird phase problems. I just did an audition tape for a colleague playing Low C bass, and I used two large-diaphragm condenser mics at a distance of about one meter, one (tube) pointed toward the junction of the neck and the body of the instrument, and the other (solid-state) toward (but not at) the bell. This gives very even coverage of the big instrument. You can then get fancy and split out the two mics slightly across the stereo field to give a really fat, big image.
