at my first klezmer gig an out of rabbi talked to me
for a bit while i was nervously trying to remember simon tov
(my friend was singing it in my ear). this rabbi was also a
jazz pianist and knew a great deal about music. he told me
about the different modes of the harmonic minor scale
(found throughout klezmer and eastern folk music) and described
a process of spiritual ascesion that related the modes to the
incantaions the rabbi was singing. so, like:
1st mode: singing 1st prayer
2nd mode: singing 2nd prayer
etc.
and as you ascended in modes you acsended spiritualy or something,
i guess. i thought it was interesting but haven't had a chance to see
this guy since, he lives in detroit and i have ever forgotten his name,
if i ever knew at all. does anybody know about this or similar processes
of directly applying music theory (modes, rhythms, harmonies) towards
specific religeous/spiritual goals?
that would be sooo cool to hear about.
thanks,
stuart
