In North America I have two orchestras who I feel have the best clarinets overall as a group. To your aurprise they are San Fransico Symphony with David Breeden, Luiz Baez, David Neumann and Donald Carroll who is a great Bass Clarinet player. The other section is also the Chicago Symphony with Coombs, Greg Smith, John Bruce Yeh and I also believe Julie LaRoche. Both groups have excellent integration of tone and blend. When I was younger I had a great chance of studying at a summer camp with David Glazer and he told me to get a record of the Chicago symphony playing Bruckner 9 and ever since I have been in love with this sonority of tone. As of late I have enjoyed the San Fransico Symphony recordings of Roger Sessions symphonies and truly admired the excellent blend of this section.
