Does playing in a professional orchestra have to be your full time job? I'm in high school and play in our band, but I still want to keep playing music after I graduate. However, I don't want to play in an orchestra for my career. Is it just something you can do as a hobby?

An orchestra that is of high-caliber, and that puts on a regular season of concerts, i.e. every weekend, except summers, will require you to be a highly-trained professional, and that would most likely be your full time job. You're not out of luck though: there are many community orchestras, or amateur groups that you could join. You could consider joining a youth orchestra even, as their age limits usually go until about 24 years of age. Even still, music requires time, practice, and dedication for the experience of it to be worthwhile.

There are orchestras that practice once a week, and they are really good! So no, orchestra after high school does NOT need to be your job......also if you belong to a church that has an orchetra you can join that. That's what I am doing and we play some pretty hard and pretty pieces and we only practice once a week for 2 hours and play every sunday....I love it!

Even if you're only rehearsing one or two hours a week, practice is still required, however.

If you can sight read a grade 7 then you don't have to practice so much, but until you can do that you're out of luck abigail.
