What is the role of the third octave key on the oboe

The role of the third octave key on a oboe, is to play outstandingly high notes at extremely soft volumes basically. If you have it, you probably won't use it but once or twice, and if you don't, don't even fret about it. It is almost completely useless unless you are doing really really wierd music.
