Hi! I've been playing the clarinet and alto sax for some time but never had a teacher or any books. I play in a Jazz band and an orchestra, though, and sometimes I accompany a choir. My conductor asked my now if i could give one of her students (she teaches organ) clarinet lessons because this girl needs it for college. There is no musical education at schools here in Germany (only theory) and private lessons are very expensive. I would really like to give this girl lessons, but I don't even know myself what I'm doing when I play, I just play. Should I try to teach her anyways? Please help me!

I think you should pass on whatever knowledge you have. If you can read music and can play clarinet to a reasonable standard, you should be able to teach it. The most important thing a clarinet teacher can do is to encourage the student, listen to her, spot obvious mistakes and urge her to practise, practise, practise.

For clarinet advice, the best place to go on the web is the "Clarinet Phorum" at:

I hope I got that right!

I think you should go for it. If there is no musical education in schools where you are, whatever knowledge you have will help the girl greatly. Just guide her and set her in the right direction and give her a strong foundation in the basics.
