 Cleaning Rod for recorder
Author: Sam
Date:   2000-04-07 21:16

Hey, I recently got a new recorder and it came with a cleaning rod. Well, I'm not exactly sure how to actually clean the instrument. Any help on how to use it correctly would be greatly appreciated.

The cleaning rod has a slot in one end. You push a piece of cloth through this. The best sort of cloth is silk. You can then push the rod through the recorder and pull the cloth through, mopping up any moisture inside the recorder.

The windway, which is the hole you blow into, sometimes gets clogged with moisture. Don't stick anything into the windway, as you might accidentally damage the lip (labium) which produces the sound. If you do this, the recorder is useless. If you absolutely have to poke something into the windway, use a feather, as it will not do any harm to the labium.

Good explanation Eoin. I'd like to add that after threading the end of the cloth through the eye of the rod, I flip the cloth over the top and give it a twist. This is to make sure that the tip of the rod is covered, and doesn't scratch the bore. If the rod is plastic or wood, it's not too critical, but if it's metal it might scratch.
