The joys of playing (how do you count 1/32 notes?)

Yes, another one of my long, rant-like posts...

A few days ago I was talking to a friend of mine, who also happens to be an oboeist. (She's actually not taking band as a course next year because 'it doesnt fit into her schedule'. Personally I think its because she's just not that into it... after all, while I'm warming up, she always complains about wanting to go back to violin, or wanting to switch to drama... pfft). Anyway. We were talking, and she was wailing about turning in her oboe for the summer, since she uses a school instrument.

And then she said, "Aiii, I don't know how you can play so often... it gets really annoying, doesn't it?", and then continued to rant about how she didnt understand how I could practice so often, or that she didnt see how I could like practicing, or something else along those lines...

And all this time, I was thinking to myself, 'Jeepers...'. It was shocking. Here she was ranting about hating playing the oboe and la-de-da, when she chose band as an elective and oboe as her instrument voluntarily. How could you invest your time into something that you dont like, or that you find annoying?

I just dont see it. Lately I've been on a music high - every chance I get, I pick up Viconia-Aelisis-Horatio (that's the oboe's name... its a long story. But really, people, naming instruments isnt a bad idea. Most people think Im crazy, but I swear, its not me, it was my band director's idea. He says that giving it a name is like giving it an identity... but I digress). Every spare minute I have I'm itching to play.

It's something that makes me happy. It makes me really happy, and there she is, professing her hate for it, though she willingly chose to dedicate her time to it. Arrg, she's so frustrating. But anyway. Music *does* make me happy. Really, really happy. It's an awesome thing.. =).

Oh, and I have a few questions, if you all could find it in yourselves to help me out.
1) How do you count 1/32 notes?
2) I need some new material to play. Any pieces you recommend?
and
3) YAY!! School is out on friday!!! (ok, thats not a question, but...)

That is really something to think about isn't it. I think your friends complains too much. Frankly, people like that won't make it in music anyway: you have really got to dedicate yourself.
To count 32nd notes: If it's a really slow piece, like the first movement of the cimarosa concerto, then instead of counting quarter notes, count eigth notes. For every eigth note pulse there will be four 32nd notes. In that case count as 1-e-and-a. Other than that, if it's fast, then just play as a rip, or count 2 for every sixteenth note. It's all just a bunch of math really!

I play my flute and the piano every chance I get too...they also make me very happy to play! Don't let your friend discourage you, it sounds like you are doing just fine playing your instrument every chance you get, that's how you get good at things, right?! And it sounded like d-oboe did a good job of explaining the 1/32 notes. ;) And a good piece to learn how to play this summer is 'Cannon in D' (I am learning it over this summer on both piano and flute! *I know I know I keep on posting that every body that asks learn 'Canon in D' this summer. lol* but its a really good song to learn!) The address where I got the music was at : http://www.mysheetmusic.com/scomain.asp?id=0000130146&Scorch=Selected (it says its for flute, but all you have to do is click on the 'change instrument' button and click on oboe then it transposes it for you.) Have fun with your oboe this summer!
