Im a highschooler, and I want to play oboe through college and after, maybe professionally. Sadly though, Oboes are really expensive. I currently own my own oboe: we bought it used and in good condition, about 3 years back. Sadly, the poor thing is almost dead. I need a new oboe, I want a new oboe.
My parents know this, but COST is still a huge issue. At any rate, I was looking at the Larilee 400W. I dont know much about the brands or anything - I just need to know if this is a good quality instrument. (Eventually Ill buy myself a Patricola Proffessional model... ouh, thats a sexy instrument).
I cant go to a music store for help in choosing an oboe... simply because there arent any. Any advice on good oboes to choose, or opinions on the Larilee brand are welcomed and appreciated.

I don't really know much about a Larilee oboe, but I can tell you that I would definitely play the instrument I was about to buy before I bought it. You should consider trying several different brands before making any selection.
As for student models, I think Fox oboes are probably the best. I would for sure steer clear of Buffet oboes; those people ought to stick to clarinets.
Why may I ask are you set on getting a Patricola oboe one day? I don't know anything about those, but I can just about guarantee you anyway they won't play like a Loree. Other professional brands you should try out would be the Covey oboe and the new Yamaha professional models.

I agree that you should consider a Fox. I think the Larilees are better than some, but Fox oboes are sturdy and have a lovely tone. The 330 has most of the full conservatory keys, is made of a very heavy resonite (no worry about cracks, especially if you use it outside), and has heavy sterling silver-plated keys. I know that many players use them through college. A good place to look for used oboes is http://www.usedoboes.com/. I think they have a trial period on any oboes that they sell, but you'd have to check it out. I play a Fox 450 and am quite happy with it. Good luck!

I would like to argue a little: I will agree that Buffet student oboes are kinda crappy, but their professional models are actually quite good. I play a Greenline professional oboe, and the scale, intonation, and especially the low register, are impeccable. For student models, I suggest these: Fox, Selmer, and even Yamaha. Now, student oboes are student oboes; they will most likely be somewhat out of tune, the dynamic range will be somewhat smaller, and the tone will not resonate quite as much. But, they are good to start out on, seeing as they have good response, and in most cases an even tone.

Thing is though, there arent any music stores!!! Im in the Dominican Republic, and there are no stores that sell oboes. SOOOO, I cant try any out... since no place has any. That's the real dilemma...
How do you chose an oboe without getting to try it out first? I know theres a place that ships you 3 flute models and you chose one... if only they did that for oboes!!

The following site says they'll ship up to 3 oboes for you to try. They've got all the major brands and some used oboes too. Look on the page and click "trial information". I kknow they have a very good guarantee also. I believe it is two years against cracking, but check for sure.
