What you have to keep in mind is that to tongue properly your tongue should hit the tip of the mouthpiece. You could practice scales, tonguing very slowly at first and gradually increase your speed and after awhile you should noctice a difference in your tonguing speed and quality. If you're not taking private lessons then this would be a good time to start. -Corey

The tongue lightly touches the reed, it doesn't "hit" the reed.

I know exactly how you feel. I was never taught how to tongue either and now i'm paying for it. anyways, what you do is you practise hitting the reed with your tongue, not hard, and gradually 'tongue' it softer. you should be able to get quarters out easily. try doing that in your practise time, cause it could sound weird at the start. after a while it should be second nature.

TOUCH the reed don't HIT it not even lightly unless you are going for a "slap tongue" effect.
