i'm playing tenor sax in my marching band and i haven't really played tenor before. i play alto sax and clarinetand bassoon, but haven't spent much time with a tenor before. it' fairly well but low notes are a bear.it could be my mouth setting or do i just need to play long tones??

just keep practicing. i switched from alto sax to bari sax, and found out that i just had to practice. now i play the low notes fine (and the bari sax is lower than tenor sax). tenor shouldnt be that difficult. be sure to loosen up your mouth!

Well, I switched from tenor to alto and I have to say that tenor is easier than alto...at least to me. I no longer play the sax now(I'm a flute person now ^_^;;) and I think I'll just give you some tips from my experiences.
Ok, all you gotta do is relax your embouchure. Next, and this is important too.....open up your throat as if you're singing a very low note. And use more air support(Duh ^_^;;). Otherwise, check for leaks and other faults in your instrument or try a softer reed if possible(later you can switch to a harder one if you're confident..). You'll notice that the embouchure used on the tenor(and baritone and lower pitched saxes) is more relaxed than the one you used on the alto(and soprano). And yes, do long tones, scales and practice, practice, practice!! Hope this helps and good luck.

Blow really hard @ 1st then eventually it will come with a softer breath. Cover a little more of the embouchure when you blow hard.

Well wot really helped me when i started was loosening my mouth wot i did was have my mouth as if i was singing a really low lote and it helped i dont know if it will help others and just blow really hard and eventually it wil come instantly.
