Getting a good sound on the flute with braces?
Author: Erin

I've been playing the flute for 7 and a half years and just recently got braces on. The tone quality on my flute has really suffered. The sound I've been getting has a lot of air in it and is kinda weak- it doesn't sound very good. Do any of you flute players have any tips for me? --Erin

Making the initial adjustment can be quite difficult for the majority of flute players and the length of time to adjust varies with each individual. To help make the process a little quicker make sure you drink plenty of water and keep a glass handy while you practice. All flutists need to maintain the proper moisture level in their mouth because during the winter season it's easy to develop "dry mouth" with the furnace running. Your braces also add to the "dry mouth" problem so keep the water handy year round.

Sometimes when my students will have setbacks from the initial adjustment period because the orthodontist changes appliances or major bracket changes - just be prepared for this.

Working with a portable tuner at home during your practice sessions is another tool use during your adjustment period. Reliable tuners have come way down in price (under $40 in my region).

Make sure you are using the proper deep breathing technique and posture. Going over the basic techniques presented 7 years ago is a great tool. Back then you probably didn't have a full understanding of what the teacher was asking you to do.

Hi.
I also have braces on and play the flute. My tone has suffered a bit for a while but after practicing for a while and working hard. My tone is back up to where it was before. Don't give up!
