What's the deal with plastic recorders?
Are they worth playing, or should i stick to wood?

Plastic recorders are a cheap alternative to wood. The very cheapest plastic recorders are very poor and have many tuning problems. The best plastic recorders are better than the worst wood recorders and still cost less.

An excellent plastic recorder is the Yamaha "Rottenburg" series. The Soprano is YRS-302B and costs about $20. It is also available in "simulated rosewood finish" as YRS-312B. This is an absolutely delightful recorder which only costs about $25.

For larger recorders, buying plastic is essential unless you have lots of money.

In favour of plastic recorders:

- They are very much cheaper than wood.
- They require virtually no looking after at all.

Against plastic recorders:

- The worst of them are very bad. Choose carefully.
- The tone of plastic recorders is slightly less breathy than a wood.
- Moisture builds up in the windway easier in a plastic recorder than in a wood, which can be annoying.

Wood recorders definitely have a better sound to those with a keen ear. If you are playing with other recorder players you want to have recorders made out of the same material. Plastic recorders do not require much maintenance. If you use wood recorders and live in a climate that changes, you need to keep the instruments in moderate temperatures. The wood can expand and contract according to humidity and temperature. I do not leave expensive wood recorders in the car during the winter time because of the varying temperature. If the recorder is very cold, you need to let the instrument warm to room temperature by warming it in your hands instead of blowing warm air through it.

Hi.
Wood recorders are a bit better than plastic recorders but recquires a lot more maintenance. Plastic recorders are not all that bad though and are much easier to care for.
